On Thursday, October 17th, the Brent Study Club celebrated its 75th anniversary with a reception at The Oaks Venue in Centreville. The Brent Study Club, a women’s outreach group, was founded by several local women from Bibb County, including Lucille Faucette, Ruby Goodson, Selby Hubbard, Mary Von Roles (Krout), Wanna Mae McLaren, Mildred Mitchell, Opal Pope, Bernice Stacy, Doris Stacy, Jane Ward, Lallie Ward, and Grace Yeager.

The club has been committed to community service, contributing to projects such as the Bibb County Children’s Theater, Bibb County Distinguished Young Women, local schools and libraries, the Bibb County Schools Foundation, the Bibb Medical Center Nursing Home, the Brent-Centreville Library, the Department of Human Resources, Relay for Life Survivors Reception, scholarships for high school seniors, Christmas gifts for The Lighthouse residents, and Turning Point.

The reception began with Don Mack singing an old hymn in honor of the Brent Study Club, followed by a prayer from Kirk Smith. Brent Mayor Bobbie White presented a plaque to the club, officially dedicating October 17th as Brent Study Club Day. In further recognition of the group’s service, a flag flew over the State Capital on October 1st in their honor. Donna Elam shared some of the club’s history, including the fact that the Brent Study Club was responsible for establishing the area’s first library.

Today, the Brent Study Club consists of 24 members: Emily Blake, Janice Blake, Donna Brothers, Kayla Cooner, Pam Cottingham, Donna Elam, Teressia Freeman, Simone Gardner, Tracy Griffin, Jodi Hamby, Karen Hubbard, Jan Jamison, Fran Kornegay, Roberta Lawrence, Jan Lowery, Rhonda Massengale, Peggy McGrew, Penny Mitchell, Christi Nichols, Karen Peak, Cindy Smitherman, Lori Stripling, Charlotte West, and Susan Young.
