Our County’s Best Kept Secret: The Bibb County Extension Office

By Savannah Logan

As Extension Week approaches from September 16th to 20th, it’s time to recognize one of our community’s most valuable yet often overlooked resources: the Bibb County Extension Office. While many may associate the Extension with 4-H programs and agricultural services, their offerings extend far beyond what most people realize. In fact, their wide range of services helps improve lives in every corner of our community, from young children to adults, in both practical and personal ways.

Alabama Extension is guided by the mission of “taking the university to the people.” This philosophy reflects their goal of not only providing educational resources but also partnering with local communities to offer tools and skills that enhance daily life. Whether you’re managing a farm, raising a family, or planning for your financial future, the Extension is there to help.

For high school students, they offer valuable programs on financial literacy, teaching young people how to manage their money and make informed decisions. Adults can also benefit from their financial management services, which provide insights on budgeting, saving, and long-term planning. If you own property, their land management programs guide you on sustainable practices and how to maximize the use of your land. For those with a green thumb, or aspiring gardeners, the Extension offers workshops on everything from starting a home garden to more advanced agricultural projects.

Beyond practical skills, the Extension also provides important lessons in professional etiquette. These programs cover the basics, such as table manners, how to engage in small talk, and even the proper way to shake hands or place a nametag. Agriculture remains a core focus, with support for local farmers to ensure a thriving agricultural community. Parenting classes are available to help families navigate the challenges of raising children, while financial aid guidance assists parents in applying for educational support for their children. Workforce development is another key offering, with advice on how to apply for jobs, prepare for interviews, dress professionally, and succeed in the workplace.

If you haven’t explored all that the Bibb County Extension has to offer, now is the perfect time to do so. Whether you’re looking to enhance your garden, sharpen your professional skills, or seek financial advice, the Extension is here to help. You can stay informed by following their updates on Facebook (Bibb County – Alabama Extension), visiting their office at 183 SW Davidson Drive in Centreville, or calling (205) 926-4310. If there’s a specific topic you’re interested in that they don’t currently offer, they will do their best to connect you to the right resources.

In celebration of Extension Week, stay tuned for a more detailed article next week that will dive deeper into the Bibb County Extension’s mission and all the ways they are working to improve our community.
